62% of the priority patents at ULL have been applied for by women

Wednesday 26 de April de 2023 - 12:48 CEST

Every April 26th since the year 2000, the World Intellectual Property Day, This year's edition has chosen to highlight the contribution of women to the world of invention and, therefore, carries the motto "Women and Intellectual Property: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity." In the case of the research staff at the University of La Laguna, patents filed by women (or with female participation, in the case of collective applications) are the majority, representing 72 out of a total of 116 filed historically, that is, 62%, some of which are no longer in force.

This data refers to "priority" patents, which is the term used to describe the first patent application filed. Normally, this application is filed in the applicant's country of origin, but there may be cases where it is filed in a different country. Once this priority patent is filed, the invention in question can be protected in many more countries to achieve greater international protection, but this classification only reflects that first step. Currently, 17.41% of the 62 patents still in force have been licensed.

This patent registry dates back to 1992, when the first application for industrial protection was filed by, ironically, a woman: Sonia García Hernández, a researcher in the Department of Soil Science and Geology. The university also holds eight utility models (another form of industrial protection), four of which involve female researchers.

Currently, the researcher at the University of La Laguna with the most patents is the professor of Physical Chemistry Elena Pastor Tejera, with four, followed by Laura Díaz Rodríguez, from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, with two patents and one utility model; and subsequently, with two patents each, Verónica Pino Estévez, Professor of Analytical Chemistry; Cristina Giménez Mariño, from the Department of Botany, Ecology and Plant Physiology; and Raquel Marín Cruzado, Professor of Physiology.

Regarding the male researchers at the institution with the most protected inventions, the professor of Pharmacology Ricardo Borges Jurado He holds four patents and one utility model; and with four each, Gonzalo García Silvestro, from the Department of Chemistry; Jacob Lorenzo Morales, director of the Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health of the Canary Islands; Raimundo Cabrera Pérez, Department of Botany, Ecology and Plant Physiology; José Piñero Barroso, from the area of Parasitology; Javier del Castillo Vargas, from the Department of Physics; and Javier Fernández Castro, Professor of Organic Chemistry.

The current [information/information/etc.] is available on the website of the Research Transfer Office of the University of La Laguna. patent portfolio and utility models for consultation. It contains information on currently protected inventions, 70 in total. The field of knowledge with the most patents is Science, with 27, followed by Engineering and Architecture (21), Health Sciences (12), and Arts and Humanities (2).
