This project brings together experts from diverse fields such as physics, engineering, biology, veterinary medicine, and social economy, in order to develop innovative technologies that protect these animals and preserve marine biodiversity.

The increase in collisions between vessels and cetaceans has generated concern in the scientific community, as it poses a threat to whales and dolphins. To mitigate this problem, the Atlantic Whale Deal is implementing advanced detection systems, creating risk maps, and developing tools to help reduce the negative impacts on marine wildlife.

One of the most innovative aspects of this project is the use of thermal cameras for the automatic detection of cetaceans in real time, both day and night, providing researchers and vessel crews with crucial data to avoid collisions.

For the past several years, the University of La Laguna has been collaborating with the shipping company Fred Olsen, which already has two thermal imaging cameras installed on the ferries that operate between Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura. The main objective of this new project is to validate the use of this technology and its effect on collision mitigation, not only in Canary Island waters but also on different types of vessels in the Atlantic Ocean, with a particular focus on the Macaronesian region.

International coordination and technological advances

The team from the University of La Laguna (Carlos E. Mora, Alicia Rodríguez, Peña Fabiani, and Olivia Marín) recently participated in a meeting in Porto, where they worked alongside other project collaborators to coordinate efforts and share progress. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the results obtained so far and to plan future actions to ensure the effectiveness of the implemented technologies.

In addition to this academic center, the project has the participation of institutions such as ARDITI-Mare Madeira (Portugal), the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Consortium for the Design and Exploitation of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), University of La Rochelle (France), University College Dublin (Ireland) and other organizations specializing in marine conservation.

The meeting in Porto, organized by CIIMAR, was key to coordinating research and adapting technological solutions to the diverse regions of the Atlantic. The joint work of these institutions ensures that the solutions are applicable to different marine environments and vessel types. The team from the University of La Laguna will continue to actively participate in the development of technologies and strategies to protect cetaceans. In the long term, it is hoped that these tools can be applied to a variety of vessels and that the project's results will serve as a model for other areas of the world.

With its participation in this project, the University of La Laguna reaffirms its commitment to marine research and conservation, contributing to sustainable solutions that benefit both society and the environment.

The Atlantic Whale Deal project is an international initiative that seeks to prevent accidental collisions between ships and cetaceans, a…

[6,37,10

post-10290","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destacado","category-investigacion","category-portada-ull

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/cetaceos-Carlos-E.-Mora-Alicia-Rodriguez-Pena-Fabiani-Olivia-Marin-300x216.jpg
["GET
