In her remarks, she acknowledged the effort and sacrifices made by all those who received their doctorates at the ceremony and expressed her hope that they will contribute to addressing social, scientific, and economic challenges.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67180\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67180\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/portal\/noticias\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/Investidura-doctores-inicio-comitiva-academica-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Head of the academic delegation, at the beginning of the session.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>current environmental issues. &quot;It is time to advocate for a competitive and excellent science, certainly, but also one that is kinder to the environment, more understandable and humane.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1fJtmvgliqnUY1oc7PokUxekSut-pG6d0?usp=share_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Photo gallery<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ceremony held in the Paraninfo served as an opportunity for some of the 121 individuals who defended their doctoral theses during the 2021-22 academic year to publicly receive the objects that distinguish them as holders of their doctorates. This ceremony, beyond its formal aspects, is highly significant for the institution, as it marks the continuity of the transmission of knowledge: \u201cYou are the scientists of the future, those who will lead teams, manage scientific programs, and dedicate a significant part of your lives to one of the most exciting aspects of humankind: the pursuit of knowledge.\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67176\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/portal\/noticias\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/Investidura-doctores-rectora-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosa Aguilar, rector.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aguilar pointed out that these new PhDs have achieved the highest academic degree at a time when the University of La Laguna has made a significant effort to attract talent, opening all accredited faculty positions to competition and prioritizing candidates with a research background. Furthermore, the recent approval of the new Science Law, which, in addition to allocating a greater percentage of the national GDP to research, proposes improvements in working conditions for various professional profiles, has also been noted.<\/p>\n<p>The University of La Laguna itself has made progress in this area, as it is about to begin implementing its new Strategic Research Plan, which will be in effect until 2025. This plan includes significant improvements in personnel, infrastructure, and research management, with an additional funding of 5 million euros. \u201cAs you can see, you are earning your doctorates in a somewhat more favorable national and regional context.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The rector took the opportunity to highlight the University of La Laguna&#039;s commitment to open access science, aimed at more broadly disseminating the institution&#039;s scientific output to the public. As a result, the number of open access articles has increased from 551 in 2020 to 761 in 2021. &quot;More democratized access to scientific knowledge is one of our greatest aspirations.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted the center&#039;s scientific output and international focus: \u201cWe publish online, with teams of people from very diverse research centers, and we are cited in countless publications. In our case, researchers from our institution received almost 6,000 citations in 2021. This means that we are doing relevant science, without a doubt.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doctoral theses on the rise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The session began with a presentation by the director of the Doctoral School and Postgraduate Studies, Maravillas Aguiar, who outlined the main data points of the center she directs. She noted,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67179\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67179\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/portal\/noticias\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/Investidura-doctores-maravillas-aguiar-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maravillas Aguiar, director of the Doctoral School and Postgraduate Studies.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The academic center has around twenty doctoral programs to carry out this training, while also noting that there are currently around 1,250 doctoral students at the institution, in addition to their tutors and thesis directors - at least as many - which makes a total of about 2,500 people at the highest level of training and research.<\/p>\n<p>Aguiar pointed out that the number of people with doctorates at the institution has not stopped growing in recent years: thus, in 2018\/19, 70 doctoral theses were defended; in 2019\/20, 87; in 2020\/21, 106; and finally, in 2021\/22, the academic year to which today&#039;s ceremony corresponded, 121 doctoral theses were reached.<\/p>\n<p>The school director noted that, while today&#039;s ceremony marks the culmination of years of advanced training in doctoral studies, culminating in the highest qualification, it is not an end, but a new beginning: \u201cYou have crossed a significant threshold in your lives, and on the other side is, and always will be, the University of La Laguna, which will always be a part of you. Congratulations, and here is to a bright future.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Following Aguiar&#039;s remarks, the first round of investiture of new PhDs took place, after which there was time for the reading of the inaugural lecture by Casiana Mu\u00f1oz, deputy director of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, who spoke about the value of the Canary Islands observatories as a driving force.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67177\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67177\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67177\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/portal\/noticias\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/Investidura-doctores-casiana-munoz-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casiana Mu\u00f1oz, deputy director of the IAC.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>for science and technology. The speaker highlighted the importance of these infrastructures, not only for astronomical research but for science in general and for the public, as they generate income in the communities where they are located. The researcher also mentioned the close collaboration between the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics and the University of La Laguna, an institution that has had an Astrophysics Department for many years.<\/p>\n<p>The investiture and admission to the University Senate of the second group of doctoral graduates present in the hall took place after a lecture by Casiana Mu\u00f1oz and a musical performance by guitarist Samuel Delgado. Interestingly, the first Romani doctoral graduate of the University of La Laguna, Jos\u00e9 Carmona, was awarded his doctoral cap during the ceremony.
