Since last Friday, the 14th, four exhibitions have been on display at the University of La Laguna in different locations, showcasing the natural potential of these islands. They are part of... the 2nd Conference on Canary Islands Biodiversity and Sustainability<\/a> from the educational center, in addition to the presence of a large number of children at the celebration of Earth Day (April 22) and the development of explanatory talks on different topics.<\/p>\n

The program of events scheduled until May 5th has been organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and Social Participation, together with the Cultural Center for Gardening and the Wolfredo Wildpret Botanical Garden Chair. It also has the support of the city councils of Tacoronte and La Laguna, as well as the Tenerife Island Council.<\/p>\n

The first exhibition, located in the La Capilla Cultural Space, is titled 'Discovering the Biodiversity of the Seabed of Tacoronte'. It is a selection from the 1st Tenerife Marine Biodiversity Open and is curated by Alejandro de Vera and Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Casanova. The exhibition is divided into two main sections: rocky and sedimentary seabeds, featuring large-format images of the species inhabiting each. Accompanying the 48 photographs are seven high-quality videos of the seabed areas featured in the exhibition, as well as two display cases with pieces from the Museum of Nature and Archaeology of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which collaborated on this initiative.<\/p>\n

This project began, explained the Environment Councillor of Tacoronte, with a query about the seabed off the coast of El Pris, about which almost nothing was known, she said. Through citizen science and the contributions of renowned underwater photographers, a spectacular project was completed last summer, she said, which has not yet been presented to the local fishermen. They will learn about this content when the exhibition travels to the municipality.<\/p>\n

All participants in the presentation of the exhibits agreed on the importance of showcasing the islands' natural heritage to students, so they become aware of the region's biodiversity and the urgent need for its protection. These exhibits also have a clear educational component, as two Environmental Education and Science students will act as guides for the children who visit them.<\/p>\n

The other exhibition, which opened on Friday in the Pablo Gonz\u00e1lez Vera Art Gallery next to the Paraninfo building and is more scientific in nature, is 'Microdiversity: Small but Powerful', curated in\"\" This exhibit, by Carolina P\u00e9rez, Juan Ram\u00f3n Hern\u00e1ndez, and Nereida Rancel, researchers at the University of La Laguna specializing in biochemistry, botany, and microbiology, focuses on microorganisms, which are present in all types of habitats. Through various panels, it provides information on topics such as the human microbiome, the diversity of cell forms, biodiversity, natural products, and microorganisms in plant cultivation.<\/p>\n

In the lobby of the Central Building, you can also view several exhibits from the Tenerife Island Council on sustainable development, how to help the planet from our homes, and the concept of a world without forests. Another exhibit, dedicated to the birds of the Canary Islands and featuring the work of photographer Jos\u00e9 Luis Mortales Trujillo, is open at the Viana 50 building.<\/p>\n

Earth Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the highlights of these events is Earth Day, next Saturday, April 22nd, a session designed for family visits where children and adults alike can enjoy themselves. \"\"of various outdoor events, in the Canary Garden of the Central Campus of the university.<\/p>\n

Thus, a dozen workshops are planned on topics as varied as Canary Island bats, creating your own herbarium, composting, and pollination.
