The thirtieth edition of the Adeje Summer University (UVA) organized by the municipal corporation and the University of La Laguna, has begun today, Friday, July 14, with the celebration of the opening ceremony. Beatriz Crespo, Dr. [Name], a specialist in Sports Medicine and Performance and an expert in innovation and technology, opened this event, which will focus particularly on Artificial Intelligence and how it can affect society in general. The University of Valladolid (UVA) will offer more than a dozen courses and workshops this year, which will be held next week, from Monday the 17th to Friday the 21st.

The first edition of the Adeje Summer University was held in 1993, a collaboration between the local council and the academic institution that has fostered hundreds of discussions through courses and various activities. The Rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, present at the opening ceremony, emphasized that this initiative continues to be “fresh, youthful, and adaptable,” adding that “it helps us see where we come from, where we are now, and commit to the future by reinventing ourselves and moving forward to remain useful to society, which is ultimately who we serve.”.

""“How to integrate Artificial Intelligence into different areas of life is one of the great challenges that humanity currently faces,” the rector pointed out. José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, mayor of Adeje, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that this academic event, from its inception, “has sought to address the problems that arise at any given time, and that is why the choice of AI as leitmotiv "This year's success is no coincidence." Fraga also took the opportunity to highlight the municipality's commitment to knowledge, not only through the Summer University but also through seven editions of the Tourism degree program offered in Adeje.

AI as a driver of change

The creation of the internet decades ago had an impact on society that remains difficult to quantify today. The possibilities offered by the web are almost limitless, as are the opportunities that can be generated through the use of Artificial Intelligence. However, the key difference between the two tools is that AI has drastically disrupted daily life, producing changes that are sometimes difficult to even assimilate.

“Humanity’s problem is that we don’t die, but we do get sick,” noted the doctor, who also believes that using Artificial Intelligence, such a vast amount of data could be cross-referenced that it would be possible to reduce the number of diseases like diabetes or cancer. “711% of deaths worldwide are caused by non-communicable diseases, which can be prevented through healthy lifestyle habits,” and that’s where decisions need to be made (level of pollution where one lives, what to eat, how much exercise to do, etc.). The researcher emphasized that this is where AI can help humans, precisely in making those decisions.

The film, banking, logistics, and many other industries are already seeing the impact of Artificial Intelligence on their daily operations and business. However, the need to create regulations governing AI is one of the points that experts are emphasizing most. “A knife isn't inherently good or bad. It's a tool that allowed us to survive in past eras and continues to do so today, but if you use it to kill someone, it becomes a weapon,” Beatriz Crespo stated to conclude her presentation.
