The agreement also includes the launch of the first phase of another project, this one dedicated to the 'Analysis, coding, and evaluation of the census of whistlers', with the aim of working with the census already developed in previous years to delve deeper into the data, identify gaps, and analyze the results.

For all of this, the institutional chair, which will be directed by Professor Grecy Pérez Amores, The chair, from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, will receive €30,000 in funding from the La Gomera Island Council. The idea is that, under the new academic direction, the chair will delve into more anthropological aspects and move away somewhat from the philological aspects of previous periods.

This initiative was originally created as a cultural chair, and it has now become an institutional entity, meaning it has a permanent budget and a greater presence within the university. In fact, the president of the La Gomera Island Council himself stated that for the chair to be successful, it must be linked to the university, where research and new knowledge are generated.

Curbelo also highlighted the close collaboration between the two institutions in education and research, noting that it is the higher education center with the highest number of students from La Gomera enrolled. The president of the island council expressed his gratitude for the University of La Laguna's commitment to promoting the Silbo Gomero whistling language and establishing this professorship, "which reinforces the conservation measures also promoted by the cultural association for this World Heritage Site," he stated.

For his part, the university rector maintained that the Silbo Gomero whistling language is now the heritage of all Canary Islanders, and that as a public institution of higher education, they are called upon to defend and protect it. He added that it is also an element that fosters a sense of belonging and community pride, and he praised the efforts to incorporate this cultural asset into the curriculum of the people of La Gomera. Francisco García also raised the possibility of having it performed at some of the university's academic events.

The signing of the agreement was attended by the Vice-Rector for Culture and University Extension, who oversees the institutional chairs, Isabel León, and the Island Councillor for Social Services, Education, Culture and Sports, Elena García.

El rector de la Universidad de La Laguna, Francisco García, y el presidente del Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo,…

[34,33,15,6,10
1628,3625
post-13966","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-catedra-silbo-gomero","category-catedras-institucionales-y-de-empresa","category-cultura","category-destacado","category-portada-ull","tag-cabildo-de-la-gomera","tag-silbo-gomero

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/catedra-silbo-gomero-univ-la-laguna-1-300x200.jpg
["GET
