Situation, perspectives and proposals' last Friday, January 17, as part of a day of analysis.,
A reflection and debate was held at the CajaCanarias Cultural Center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The event was opened by the Vice President of the CajaCanarias Foundation, Araceli Reymundo Izard, who considered this monograph to be very timely in contributing knowledge and proposals to the key problem of access to housing that so greatly affects Canarian society. The opening remarks were delivered by the Secretary General of the University of La Laguna, Juan Antonio García García, and the Secretary General of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Inmaculada González Cabrera, who highlighted the special collaboration between the Canarian public universities in the field of research, of which this book is an example.

The work presented aims to offer a broad and diverse perspective on the housing problem in the islands, with the goal of stimulating reflection and informing decision-making. In a problem as serious and multifaceted as housing, no perspective or talent can be disregarded when seeking appropriate solutions.

The project has been promoted by the Economic and Social Studies Service, and developed within the framework of a research agreement signed by the Fyde CajaCanarias Foundation with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of La Laguna, which has allowed the participation of twenty-four people from various research areas of these two universities, as well as the collaborations of eleven people from five other universities and three public and private institutions, all of them experts in different areas of knowledge.

The director of the Foundation in the center, accompanied by the general secretaries of the ULL, on the left, and of the ULPGC, on the right.

This collaborative work is edited by Juan Manuel Parreño Castellano, Professor of Geography at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Alejandro Armas Díaz, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and History at the University of La Laguna. Access to and enjoyment of decent and adequate housing has become one of the greatest social concerns in Spain, and especially in the Canary Islands due to our unique circumstances, despite being a constitutionally recognized right, noted Juan Manuel Parreño, for whom the gravity of the problem provided the opportunity that led to the publication of this book.

The book includes twenty-two chapters and offers a final chapter of conclusions and recommendations, listing thirty-four concrete proposals that provide guidance for action. The Economic and Social Studies Service emphasized the need for this research to have a strong proactive component in order to offer suggestions. "This was the challenge we posed to the authors," noted Alejandro Armas Díaz. In this sense, he added, this book is "groundbreaking." The proposals in the work focus on both the role of residents and public management to facilitate access to housing.

During the book launch, the editors were joined by co-authors Jesús González Pérez, Professor of Geography at the University of the Balearic Islands, who pointed out that the housing crisis is a chronic problem on a global scale; Josefina Domínguez Mujica, Professor of Geography at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who argued that housing demand is not solely determined by population growth, but also by changing living arrangements; and David Ramos Pérez, Professor of Geography at the University of Salamanca, who specifically addressed the housing situation in La Palma following the housing emergency caused by the volcanic eruption. This is not a new problem, he noted. La Palma faces the same housing-related challenges as other regions, including a high volume of vacant housing, a shortage of affordable housing, and a limited supply of long-term rentals.

The social action objectives of the CajaCanarias Foundation and its purpose of contributing to the advancement of the islands' society form the basis of the Economic and Social Studies Service. Through this initiative, the Fyde CajaCanarias Foundation seeks to provide knowledge and an analytical framework for understanding the economic and social reality of the archipelago, considering public universities as its main strategic partners, and developing research and studies whose results are shared with the public through its publications.

(Note and photos provided by the Foundation).

The Fyde CajaCanarias Foundation presented the book 'Housing in the Canary Islands.
