had approved to award Radiotelevisión Canaria the Gold Medal of the University of La Laguna on the occasion of its twenty-five years of service to information in the autonomous community.

Focusing on the agreement that establishes the new professorship, Francisco García pointed out that this is a priority alliance for the teaching and research center, since, in his opinion, the University of La Laguna and Canary Islands Radio and Television are “on the same side of the trenches” in a society where hoaxes and disinformation are increasingly prevalent, and therefore it is important to stand “on the side of truth.” Furthermore, this agreement reflects the institution's commitment to serving society by offering more practical teaching and developing research that addresses social challenges such as climate change and inequality.

For her part, María Méndez noted that this agreement is the culmination of a close collaboration between Radiotelevisión Canaria and the University of La Laguna, including activities such as the communication conferences they co-organize annually at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication. The creation of the new Chair of Communication will allow for research and training in matters of paramount importance to the public broadcaster, such as new narratives for reaching wider audiences and technological advancements, while also strengthening its commitment to truthful reporting and the correct use of language.

A joint committee with representation from both parties will appoint the director of the new chair and approve both the internal operating rules and the work plan for this first year, which will include training, dissemination and research activities, as well as the publication of monographs and, in general, any activity focused on the objectives of the chair: to address the future and advances of the audiovisual sector and the impact on it of new information technologies.

The chair will have annual funding of €21,000 to carry out its activities, which may be increased with contributions from other collaborating entities. The term of this agreement, and therefore of the chair, is one year, and it will need to be renewed at the end of each period.
