Proof of this is the rise of spin-offs technological innovations emerging from the university, the promotion of the video game sector, and financial support for research groups.

This innovative ecosystem has recently borne new fruit with the publication of a scientific study in the journal Virtual Reality, belonging to the publishing group Nature. In this work, available at this link, Researchers from the University of La Laguna and its spin-off Wooptix They have developed a technique that allows for improved screen resolution through software, without the need to change the hardware.

On the left is an actual photograph of a projector working at maximum resolution. On the right is the same projector using the proposed technique.

When we buy a television, a mobile phone, or a projector, the resolution—that is, the number of pixels (tiny dots that make up the image)—is predetermined at the factory. If we want a sharper image, the only traditional solution is to buy a higher-end model with more pixels. However, there is a physical limit to how small these pixels can be made, which imposes a ceiling on current technology.

This is where this work comes in: the team of researchers, made up of David Carmona-Ballester (video game developer and teacher), Sergio Bonaque-González (Viera y Clavijo postdoctoral researcher in the Physics department of the ULL, specializing in applied optics), Juan Trujillo-Sevilla and José M. Rodríguez-Ramos (electronic engineer and astrophysicist, both at the company Wooptix, a leader in high-resolution imaging, and also from the ULL) and Sábato Ceruso (computer engineer graduated from the ULL), has developed a method that allows doubling the perceived resolution of a screen by generating "virtual pixels" using only software, that is, through calculations performed on the device itself.

To understand how the technique works, imagine a sheet of paper with dots drawn on it, separated but relatively close together, explains Bonaque-González. “If you hold the paper up to your eyes, the dots appear to blur and enlarge, blending together, even though the original image hasn't changed.” Applying this same concept, the researchers introduce a slight blur to the screen, generating the same effect without relying on the human eye. Then, through intelligent image processing, they have managed to make the eye perceive twice the resolution without modifying the physical screen or requiring any visual effort.

The technique has been implemented in commercial projector and virtual reality systems. The accompanying figure shows the actual image projected by a projector and captured by a conventional camera that mimics human vision. On the left is the projector's native resolution, and on the right is the resulting image after applying this technique to the same projector.

This advancement will be especially useful in projectors and virtual reality devices, where lenses that slightly blur the image are already used. By applying this technique, a significant improvement in visual quality is achieved without the need to manufacture new, more advanced, and expensive screens.

The technique has been well received and, according to the researchers themselves, still has room for improvement in the future, demonstrating that the Canary Islands are not only a tourist destination, but also a center of technological innovation with international impact.

For years, the commitment to science and technology in the Canary Islands has been gaining importance as a differentiating factor…

[6,37,10

post-1851","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destacado","category-investigacion","category-portada-ull
["GET
