The added value of this work lies in its approach to agri-food cooperatives from a strategic management perspective, examining their strategic behavior. Therefore, this article provides valuable knowledge and a noteworthy theoretical framework for the cooperative sector, helping to fill an existing gap in research on the strategic behavior of these organizations, a contribution that has been recognized with this award.

The strategic behavior of agri-food cooperatives is studied in this article through the application of the strategic typology published by Raymond E. Miles and Charles C. Snow. This typology defines four strategic types (prospective, analytical, defensive, and reactive) based on how an organization, in this case, agri-food cooperatives, addresses its entrepreneurial problem (what products it offers and in which markets), its technological problem (what technology it uses to obtain and sell its products), and its administrative problem. (how it organizes itself to offer and sell its products). For these authors, the survival of organizations depends on the adjustment between these three problems, which they call the adaptive cycle.

The pioneering application of this approach to agri-food cooperatives in the Canary Islands, as presented in this article, has demonstrated that these cooperatives adopt a strategic, analytical, or hybrid approach, seeking to balance efficiency and cost control with innovation. Furthermore, the analysis of the strategic adjustment or adaptive cycle of these agri-food cooperatives has revealed a high degree of alignment between decisions and aspects related to the entrepreneurial challenge, specifically regarding the products they offer and the markets they serve.

However, the entrepreneurial problem shows little correlation with decisions related to the technology used in cooperatives (technological problem) and with organizational characteristics (administrative problem). In addition to these findings, this article highlights a clear strategic weakness: the planning carried out by agri-food cooperatives, which exhibits a reverse adaptation to what it should be, given the organizational characteristics of these cooperatives and the products they offer in their target markets.

In this sense, and as a practical implication of this study, it is highlighted that the managers of agri-food cooperatives need to be aware that they have to design a flexible plan that allows them to offer innovative products to take advantage of the opportunities in the environment.

All of this must be done with the appropriate organizational design and technology. This will improve the alignment between the various strategic aspects or problems of these organizations and, consequently, their adaptive cycle. Agri-food cooperatives will thus be more likely to be competitive in an increasingly demanding environment.

Within the framework of the XIV Awards for Research and Teaching in the Field of Participatory Organizations, corresponding to…

[35,6,473,37,474,10

post-1899","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-departamentos","category-destacado","category-direccion-de-empresas-e-historia-economica","category-investigacion","category-matematicas-estadistica-e-investigacion-operativa","category-portada-ull

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/cooperativas-agroalimentarias-Candido-Roman-Ana-Garcia-Vanessa-Yanes-Enrique-Gonzalez--300x200.jpg
["GET
