The University of La Laguna will host tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14, the Conference on trafficking of women for sexual exploitation, The event will take place in the César Manrique Building on the Guajara Campus. The opening ceremony will be at 9:00 a.m. and will be attended by the Vice-Rector for Culture and University Extension, Isabel León; the Deputy Government Delegate in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jesús Javier Plata; the Director of the Canary Islands Institute for Equality of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ana Padrón; the Councilor for Social Action, Inclusion, Volunteering and Citizen Participation of the Tenerife Island Council, Águeda Fumero; and the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Speech Therapy, Juan Manuel Bethencourt.

Trafficking in women for sexual exploitation constitutes a serious violation of human rights and one of the most extreme manifestations of violence against women. To address the complexity of this phenomenon, the Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Sub-delegation, together with the Faculty of Psychology and Speech Therapy, the University Institute for Women's Studies, and other entities and organizations, have organized these conferences.

The intensive program will run until 8:00 p.m. and is divided into two main thematic blocks: “What is trafficking and how is it evolving?” and “Identifying victims and barriers to accessing protection.”.

To develop it, the presentations and round tables that make it up have featured a heterogeneous group of speakers that exemplifies the enormous complexity of this problem: from women survivors of trafficking to academic research staff, including social workers, members of the public prosecutor's office and the state security forces, as well as technical staff from different social organizations that fight against this scourge.
