The La Gomera Summer University<\/a> The university presents its catalog of training courses for 2025. This academic initiative, promoted by the Island Council and the University of La Laguna, opens today, Monday the 9th, the registration period for the different courses that address topics such as archaeology, new technologies, and cultural and natural heritage.<\/p>\n

The President of the Island Council, Casimiro Curbelo, emphasized that \u201cthe celebration, once again, of the La Gomera Summer University reaffirms our commitment to accessible, high-quality education for all.\u201d He added, \u201cIt is a firm commitment to bringing university education closer to the public, regardless of age or place of residence, facilitating access to knowledge without having to leave the island. This project not only enriches our educational offerings but also invigorates the cultural and social life of La Gomera.\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Garc\u00eda, stated that this is a very solid educational program, perfectly aligned with the interests of the island, and that it offers new perspectives on crucial issues, such as the One Health concept for addressing the future of the planet, knowledge of the Canary Islands' fossil heritage, the geological diversity of the region, the five centuries of relationship between the Canary Islands and the Americas, and the key role La Gomera played as a strategic point on navigation routes. It also covers other equally interesting topics, on which the university's roster of experts will offer their specialized knowledge, adapted to all audiences. "We find it very rewarding to work hand in hand with the La Gomera Island Council, an institution with which we maintain excellent and fluid relations," he affirmed.<\/p>\n

The Vice-Rector for Culture and University Extension at the academic institution, Isabel Le\u00f3n, emphasized that this revamped edition responds both to the needs of the community for work-life balance and to the educational interests of students. The 2025 program is committed to an intensive, interactive, and primarily in-person model, without abandoning the online option, and \u201cis grounded in the cultural values of a region with a prominent role for its natural and ethnographic heritage.\u201d For her part, the Island Councilor for Education, Rosa Elena Garc\u00eda, noted that the educational activities are open to everyone, without any prior requirements, \u201cin order to make knowledge accessible to all residents of the island and strengthen the ties that bind us to the wider region.\u201d.<\/p>\n

The courses cost \u20ac10 for residents of La Gomera and \u20ac20 for the general public. Furthermore, for the first time, they combine in-person and online learning.<\/p>\n

Inaugural conference and courses<\/strong><\/p>\n

This new edition of the La Gomera Summer University will kick off with the inaugural lecture, "Present and Future of Canarian Archaeology," which will take place next Friday, July 4th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Vallehermoso Town Hall's Plenary Hall. The lecture will be given by Cristo M. Hern\u00e1ndez G\u00f3mez, Professor of Prehistory at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of La Laguna and a Secondary School Teacher specializing in Geography and History. Admission is free and open to the public until the hall reaches capacity.<\/p>\n

The training program will begin with the course '\u2018Training in educational leisure activities in nature<\/a>\u2019The course, which will be held between July 7th and 11th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the General Island Archive of La Gomera, located in San Sebasti\u00e1n, will allow students to learn about the natural environment of La Gomera and its ecological and cultural value, develop environmental interpretation skills, apply group facilitation techniques in natural settings, and promote attitudes of respect for and conservation of the environment.<\/p>\n

The training '\u2018Environmental Health and One Health: Understanding the connection between the planet and our health<\/a>\u2019The course will take place from July 7th to 11th, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the Valle Gran Rey Cultural Center. Participants will learn to understand how human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected, and will develop a critical and active awareness of the challenges and solutions of the One Health approach. They will also gain the knowledge to identify the main health threats from animals and the environment, analyze real-world examples that demonstrate the connection between health and the environment, both locally and globally, and cultivate a critical and responsible attitude towards environmental problems that affect public health.<\/p>\n

From July 8th to 10th, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the Assembly Hall of the Alajer\u00f3 Town Hall will host the '\u2018First Course on Paleontology of the Canary Islands. Exceptional sites and fossils and their use and management<\/a>\u2019The objective of the course is to provide students with a first experience in relation to the extraordinary paleontological or fossil natural heritage of the Canary Islands, allowing them to advance in their knowledge and in the applications and tools for its use and management, based on experience in practical cases.<\/p>\n

On July 12th, the Assembly Hall of the Alajer\u00f3 Town Hall will host the Masterclass & wine tasting: 'Understanding the diversity of wines from the Canary Islands'\u2018<\/a>, Starting at 6:00 PM, this masterclass will allow attendees to taste a selection of these exceptional wines, as well as understand and appreciate the stories and traditions behind each glass, highlighting the impact of geography and culture on their production. It is a perfect opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of Canary Island wines and discover why they are a jewel on the international wine scene.<\/p>\n

The Multi-Purpose Building of El Curato Park in Hermigua will host, from July 14 to 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the training '\u2018Basic drone pilot course. Training for open category A1\/A3 certifications<\/a>\u2019It is aimed at the general public, with an interest in acquiring the necessary knowledge to obtain drone flight certificates in the open category A1\/A3. In addition to this knowledge, real indoor and outdoor flight practice will be carried out, which is not mandatory for obtaining these credentials.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Geodiversity and Geological Heritage of each of the Canary Islands<\/a>\u2019This course will be held in the municipality of Agulo from July 14th to 16th at the Benedicto Negr\u00edn Auditorium, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The training will provide students with a basic understanding of geological processes, especially those operating in the natural environment of the Canary Islands; identify the geodiversity and geological heritage of the Canary Islands and help focus on its conservation, management, and dissemination, as well as its sustainable educational and recreational use; manage and use a series of concepts, methods, and techniques useful for the inventory, description, and assessment of Sites of Geological Interest in the Canary Islands as components of the regional geological heritage; and recognize the importance of the geodiversity and geological heritage of the Islands in the life of Canarian society.<\/p>\n

The training action '\u2018Big Data. Extracting knowledge from data<\/a>\u2019The course will take place between July 15th and 17th at the Playa de Santiago Multipurpose Building 'La Junta', from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Participants will learn to appreciate the importance of data analysis techniques for extracting useful knowledge, as well as recognize the main knowledge extraction tasks. They will also acquire the skills to put knowledge extraction techniques into practice and receive training in the use of key digital tools for data analysis. Furthermore, the course will foster a critical approach to the conclusions drawn from data and help participants identify the dangers and ethical and moral implications of data collection and analysis.<\/p>\n

After the August break, the La Gomera Summer University will resume its activities in September, to conclude the 2025 training program with the course '\u2018The Canary Islands and America: five centuries of cultural exchange<\/a>\u2019The course, which will take place from September 16th to 18th in San Sebasti\u00e1n, in the Cabildo's Plenary Hall, will teach students to analyze the historical and cultural links between the Canary Islands and the Americas, from the earliest contacts to the present day. Students will learn to understand the role of the Canary Islands and La Gomera as a strategic point on the communication and trade routes between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, and appreciate the mutual influence between the two regions. The course will also promote critical reflection on the processes of migration, cultural mixing, and the construction of transnational identities, and will foster an interest in shared cultural heritage and its relevance in the contemporary global context.<\/p>\n

The University of La Laguna, through the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension, will issue a certificate of attendance to all those who attend a minimum of 80% of the scheduled in-person class hours. Likewise, those who successfully complete the independent student work will receive a certificate of attendance and achievement, which is also recognized for 1 or 2 ECTS credits.<\/p>\n
