The University of La Laguna recently inaugurated its Canary Island flora greenhouse, coinciding with World Wildlife Day. This infrastructure was built using funds from the Participatory Budgets<\/a> 2025 of the academic center, within the framework of its fourth edition. Participatory budgets are a tool through which the university community exercises its right to collaborate in the design and monitoring of the institution's public policies.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The new space was created to reinforce the institution's commitment to conserving the archipelago's biodiversity and promoting a more sustainable campus. The greenhouse will allow for the cultivation of up to 160 species of Canarian flora, which will coexist in this acclimatization space, designed to guarantee the survival of the specimens while strictly adhering to current regulations for the management and conservation of native flora.<\/p>\n

The Parks and Gardens Department of the University of La Laguna carries out the propagation, treatment, germination, and acclimatization of each specimen of Canarian flora, ensuring the specialized care these species require. This new infrastructure provides a controlled environment that optimizes the technical and scientific processes related to plant conservation.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the opening of this space represents the fulfillment of one of the milestones established in the Environmental Sustainability Plan, specifically within the urban planning and biodiversity axis, the responsibility for which lies primarily with the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Infrastructure. It should be noted that the cultivated flora will be used for a loan service of Canary Island flora for specific institutional events, thus avoiding the use of cut plants. This contributes to improving the environmental health of the campus and reducing the costs associated with these types of celebrations. The University of La Laguna's Gardening, Biodiversity, and Permaculture Classroom is also participating in the development of this project, reinforcing the initiative's educational and environmental awareness component. With this inauguration, the University of La Laguna reaffirms its commitment to wildlife protection, the conservation of the Canary Islands' natural heritage, and the promotion of sustainable practices within the university setting.<\/p>\n
