In this sense, Bellido Castro affirms that he “represents the sentiment of the Enlightenment,” emphasizing the influence of his travels through Europe and his contact with different philosophical and literary traditions.

A moment from the doctoral defense ceremony.

The work highlights the hybrid nature of his oeuvre, in which Baroque elements—influenced by Luis de Góngora—coexist with forms characteristic of Enlightenment thought, alongside a writing style that combines narrative, essayistic reflection, and social criticism. The researcher also emphasized that “there is not only heterodoxy, but also curiosity, a dispersion of ideas, and a clear penchant for narrative.” The research analyzes the different versions of the Madrid Charter, its textual variants and its transmission process, placing the work at the crossroads between late baroque and enlightened thought.

Similarly, the study reconstructs the author's biography from a renewed perspective and situates him as a figure linked to the cultural transformations of 18th-century Europe. His work, largely censored in his time, reflects a critical view of institutions, especially religious dogmatism and power structures.

Among the main contributions of the doctoral thesis is the complete edition of the text, including parts traditionally omitted by critics, such as the theological treatise and the verse section. This work is based on a process of transcription, variant comparison, and annotation that allows for the contextualization of the historical, literary, and cultural references present in the work.

The panel, composed of Joaquín Álvarez Barrientos, Victoria Galván González, and David Loyola López, particularly valued the scope of the work and highlighted its relevance within the field of philology, awarding it the highest distinction, summa cum laude. During the session, it was emphasized that this is an “essential contribution” to the textual establishment of the work and a significant step forward in the recovery of the Canary Islands' literary heritage.

With this research, the University of La Laguna reinforces its role in humanistic studies and opens new avenues for the study of an author who, as the researcher himself argued, should be considered essential within 18th-century Spanish literature.

The University of La Laguna recently held the defense of the doctoral thesis “Christopher of the… at the Faculty of Humanities

[15,6,416,20,10

post-5474","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cultura","category-destacado","category-escuela-de-doctorado-y-estudios-de-posgrado-facultades-y-escuelas","category-facultades-y-escuelas","category-portada-ull

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Tesis-Antonio-Jose-Bellido-02-300x200.jpg
["GET
