The Faculty of Sciences of the University of La Laguna became this Tuesday, June 2, a meeting point for fifty students from Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote who participated in the face-to-face phase of the III Canary Mini-Olympia of Chemistry, an initiative aimed at fostering interest in science among secondary school students.<\/p>\n

This group of 50 participants reached this final phase after passing a qualifying test held months ago, which places its members among the students with the best performance in this discipline among the participating centers of the archipelago.<\/p>\n

The day began with an institutional welcome by representatives of the University of La Laguna and the Official College of Chemists of the Canary Islands, the entity promoting the initiative together with the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry, as well as the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n

After taking the exam, the students had the opportunity to explore the university facilities firsthand. Accompanied by faculty from the University of La Laguna, they toured teaching and research laboratories, the library, and other areas of the Chemistry Department, gaining insight into the realities of scientific studies and some of the academic and professional career paths related to chemistry and environmental sciences.<\/p>\n

The day concluded with the awarding of prizes to those who obtained the best scores: first place went to Elena P\u00e9rez Fern\u00e1ndez, a student at the Hispano Ingl\u00e9s School in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; second place went to Jorge P\u00e9rez Ramos, from the Colegio Norte; and third place went to Dev Sadhwani Asnani, from the Luther King San Miguel.<\/p>\n

During the closing ceremony, the academic and professional leaders present congratulated all the participants for their efforts and highlighted the importance of this type of initiative in sparking scientific vocations at a time when strategic sectors linked to research, innovation, sustainability and industry are increasingly demanding qualified professionals.<\/p>\n

The Canary Islands Mini-Olympia in Chemistry is now in its third edition, solidifying its position as one of the leading initiatives promoting STEM careers in the Canary Islands. Beyond the competition itself, the event aims to connect university and research with students who, in just a few years, will have to decide on their academic and professional futures.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
