Lucía Cabrera Aparicio burst into tears. David Marrero Remedios, on the other hand, began to shout with joy. Neither of them expected such high scores. Nor did they imagine that, a few hours later, their names would become those of the students with the highest university entrance exam scores in the June 2026 session in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, based on the average of their final high school grades and the general phase of the university entrance exam.

Behind the 9.96 achieved by the student from IES Mencey Acaymo in Güímar and the 9.92 obtained by the student from Colegio La Salle San Ildefonso, there is much more than two brilliant academic records. There are afternoons of training, books, video games, long days spent studying, and a support network of family and friends that has been fundamental during these two years. And there is also a striking coincidence: both have a twin brother who also took the university entrance exams, and both cite their mothers as the main role models in their lives.

The news arrived last Friday when the results were published. Although both were confident they had done well on the exams, neither expected to achieve such high scores. “I still can’t believe it,” admits David, who acknowledges that the result surprised him much more than he had imagined. Lucía shares that same feeling. She knew the tests had gone well, but she never thought the reward would be so great. “I’m very happy and grateful. In the end, seeing all the effort pay off is very exciting,” she explains.

Two years of effort

Both students remember high school as a demanding period, marked by perseverance and the need to learn to cope with pressure. If there's one thing they're certain of, it's that a result like this isn't something you can just whip up in the weeks leading up to the university entrance exams.

Lucía had set herself a very specific goal from the beginning. With her sights set on Medicine and aware of the high entry requirements, she decided to make the most of every year. “I haven’t stopped all year,” she summarizes. Organization and discipline became two of her main allies.

David also had an ambitious goal: to achieve the highest possible grade so he could have freedom in choosing his academic future. This idea stayed with him throughout high school and allowed him to face a period that, he admits, was full of uncertain moments.

Both agree that the key has been maintaining a routine, keeping up with their coursework, and learning to manage difficult moments. Because behind the best grades, there are also doubts and results that don't always live up to expectations.

David particularly remembers one of his first math analysis exams in his second year of high school. After dedicating a lot of time to preparing, he got a 6.9. The grade disappointed him and made him wonder if he was working in the right way. However, he decided not to dwell on that feeling. “You have to keep going and not give up,” he says.

Lucía also recalls a period of uncertainty in the weeks leading up to the university entrance exams. At one point, she began to think that the math exams wouldn't go as planned. Fear and nerves crept in, but she decided to rely on the work she had done in the preceding months and reinforce her preparation by solving past exam papers. Over time, she realized that, after two years of studying the same material, she had more reason to believe in herself than to let herself be overcome by insecurity.

Indeed, both agree that one of the factors that made the final stretch more bearable was not leaving everything until the last minute. The work accumulated over the two years meant that the weeks leading up to the exam were intense, but not overwhelming. “Many times you remember concepts you’ve been studying for a long time, and it’s not as hard as you had imagined,” David explains.

Learning inside and outside the classroom

When asked about the first people they thought of upon receiving their grades, the answers were again the same. David saw his results with his mother and his twin brother, who also took the university entrance exams and achieved one of the top thirty scores. Lucía, for her part, immediately shared her joy with her family and her twin sister, who also took the exams in this session.

During the most difficult days, conversations with their mothers and siblings became a refuge from the stress and pressure inherent in such a demanding stage of life. In the case of

Lucía Cabrera, from La Salle San Ildefonso School.

Lucía, moreover, having completed her Baccalaureate at the same time as her sister allowed her to share doubts and face the daily difficulties together. “We helped each other,” she recalls.

David also highlights the close bond he shares with his brother, with whom he reviewed some material and shared knowledge. Although they both prefer to study individually to concentrate better, they agree that explaining what they've learned aloud helps them solidify the concepts.

In fact, both of them share a very similar habit: pacing the room while reviewing. If there's one thing they're both clear about, it's that getting good grades doesn't mean dedicating all their time to studying. Finding time to disconnect has been an important part of the process.

Lucía finds that balance in sports. She plays tennis and padel almost every day, an activity that allows her to clear her mind and face her study days with more energy. “It really helps me disconnect,” she says. David, for his part, finds that break in reading and, sometimes, in video games. Reading allows him to immerse himself in a completely different world and escape academic pressure for a while.

It's also no surprise that the subjects they enjoyed most during high school are precisely those that will shape their future decisions. Lucía highlights Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, while David admits his preference for Mathematics and Physics.

A future to help others

Despite their young age, both Lucía and David are quite clear about where they want to go in life. The student from La Salle San Ildefonso School doesn't recall a specific moment when she decided to study medicine. It's simply always been there. Since she was seven, she has imagined her future linked to the medical profession, and although there are no doctors in her family, she has never doubted her path.

Her goal is to specialize in neurosurgery, and when she projects herself a decade into the future, she sees herself working at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital. “Being able to help someone who is suffering, or even save their life, is a satisfaction that cannot be compared to anything else,” she says.

David Marrero, from IES Mencey Acaymo.

David also can't recall a time in his life when mathematics wasn't present. Although during his last year he also explored fields like computer engineering and data analysis, he believes he will ultimately choose a discipline that has always sparked his curiosity.

What appeals to her most is understanding the reasoning behind things and continuing to delve deeper into a field that has fascinated her for years. Her professional future is still undefined, but among the options she is considering are research, teaching, and applications related to artificial intelligence.

Despite the difference between their two vocations, there is a common thread that unites them: the desire to help others. While Lucía dreams of improving the lives of her patients through medicine, David believes that what he learns can contribute to solutions and the well-being of society in whatever field he ultimately chooses to pursue his career.

There's one last question that sparks an unexpected coincidence. When asked to name the person who has inspired them most over the years, both Lucía and David answer almost simultaneously: their mothers. The student from La Salle San Ildefonso School describes her as an example of hard work and sacrifice. Admiring the way she has worked to provide the best for her family has made her aspire to follow in her footsteps and one day become someone capable of passing on those same values.

David shares that sentiment. For him, his mother has always been there for him during difficult times and has helped him navigate periods of great uncertainty. Therefore, he believes that much of his success is also thanks to her. It's interesting that both have spent these past two years accompanied by their respective twin brothers and that, looking back, they point to their mothers as the figures who have influenced them the most.

At just eighteen years old, they still have many decisions to make. Lucía dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and working in one of the leading hospitals in the Canary Islands. David continues to explore the possibilities offered by the world of mathematics, from research to artificial intelligence.

Their professional paths are yet to be written, but they both share the same conviction: that knowledge only has true meaning when it serves to improve the lives of other people.

Communications Office

The computer screen took only a few seconds to display figures that summarized two years of effort, many hours…

[31,51

post-6424","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alumnado","category-protagonistas

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/2-Mejores-expedientes-EBAU-02-300x200.jpg
["GET
