The rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco J. Garc\u00eda, inaugurated today, Wednesday, September 2nd, in the Paraninfo, of the First Island Congress2 <\/sup>Chem<\/a>. This meeting focuses on the relationships established between Spanish researchers in organic chemistry who completed postdoctoral stays at Columbia University and their American counterparts. Garc\u00eda noted that chemistry studies are one of the pillars of the academic institution, since when it reopened in 1927 to begin its modern era, this discipline, along with law, comprised its initial academic offerings.<\/p>\n

The congress represents a reunion of colleagues connected by organic chemistry on both sides of the Atlantic and will feature participants from 16 different institutions, including universities, research centers, and pharmaceutical companies from Spain, the United States, China, and Switzerland. It comprises five plenary lectures and 12 invited speakers, as well as oral presentations and posters by young researchers. The University of La Laguna and the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) are participating in its local organizing committee.<\/p>\n

In his address, the rector noted that the strength of the results obtained in chemistry has helped the University of La Laguna to achieve a strong position in national and international research rankings. These studies continue to generate interest, with 274 students enrolled in the Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, 214 in Industrial Chemical Engineering, and 63 in the doctoral program in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He also paid tribute to Antonio Gonz\u00e1lez, who founded the Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry in 1964, a project that represented a significant leap forward in science for the institution.<\/p>\n

The inauguration was attended by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo Batlle, who praised the capacity of the region's public universities to host scientific events of this magnitude. He asserted that, despite its geographical location and limitations, the archipelago has the potential to develop world-class science. He emphasized that, within this local knowledge ecosystem, the role of universities is fundamental, as science is a strategic resource for improving people's quality of life, diversifying the economy, and increasing the region's resilience to future challenges.,<\/p>\n

In similar terms, Juan Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ednez, the Innovation Councillor for the Tenerife Island Council, addressed the audience, thanking the organizers for making Tenerife the epicenter of organic chemistry for a few days. He reiterated the idea that science is a driver of regional development, which his council supports through various initiatives. One such initiative is the renewal of the Natural Products Library project, developed in collaboration with the IPNA (Canary Islands Institute of Natural Resources), a generic repository of endemic plant species in the Canary Islands that facilitates their conservation and research into potential applications. He also emphasized that chemistry is a fundamental field in critical areas such as sustainability, new materials, and energy.<\/p>\n

The opening ceremony also included the participation of Juan Ignacio Padr\u00f3n, scientist at IPNA and co-chair of the Organizing Committee; Alison Forntier, researcher at the University of Rochester and also co-chair; and Tom\u00e1s Mart\u00edn, director of IPNA.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
