All of them work in fields fundamental to the development of public health, universal education, environmental protection and conservation, and the economic, cultural, and social advancement of communities.

Of particular note is the activity of the medical entomology laboratory, which is currently playing a key role in the surveillance and control of invasive vectors in the Canary Islands, in coordination with the General Directorate of Public Health of the Government of the Canary Islands; the alerts and biomarkers laboratory, which develops cutting-edge assays for rapid diagnosis of emerging pathogens and was already key during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the antiparasitic chemotherapy laboratory, which is a leader in the development of new drugs for the treatment of parasitic diseases worldwide, mainly for the treatment of the so-called "brain-eating amoeba" and already has an international patent for it.

All these laboratories have doctoral students from African countries such as Tunisia and Cape Verde, among others, who are working on their doctoral theses, and also ERASMUS students and European and international interns.

The director of the institute, Jacob Lorenzo, commented that the funding granted by the Island Council of Tenerife, intended to maintain and attract research talent, acquire materials, and support stays and trips necessary for the training of researchers, has already been launched and, in fact, on February 1st, a dozen researchers (5 of them pre-doctoral and as many post-doctoral) will begin their contracts at the University of La Laguna to develop projects of excellence in the field of tropical and emerging diseases highly related to society and health.

Lope Afonso was also able to learn about the activities carried out by the Canary Foundation for the Control of Tropical Diseases (FUNCCET), which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2023. FUNCCET's objectives include promoting and supporting the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health of the Canary Islands and the Atlantic Platform for the Control and Research of Tropical Diseases (PACIET), as well as organizing and promoting scientific activities and disseminating scientific advances related to tropical and emerging diseases linked to poverty, and contributing to the improvement of health in developing countries, among other things.

Una delegación del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife encabezada por su vicepresidente, Lope Afonso Hernández, ha visitado hoy, martes 16 de…

[6,59,653,76,37,10
448,3059,3433
post-7587","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destacado","category-institucion","category-instituto-universitario-de-enfermedades-tropicales-y-salud-publica-de-canarias","category-institutos-universitarios","category-investigacion","category-portada-ull","tag-cabildo-de-tenerife","tag-instituto-de-enfermedades-tropicales-y-salud-publica-de-canarias","tag-lope-afonso
["GET
