They are caused by a variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and toxins, and their health, social, and economic consequences are devastating. Their epidemiology is complex and often linked to environmental conditions. Many are vector-borne, have animal reservoirs, and are associated with complex life cycles. All of these factors make their control a public health challenge.

ULL Debates is an initiative coordinated by the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension, which, in this edition, is organized by the Biomedical Research Network Center for Infectious Diseases (CIBERINFEC) and the Canary Foundation for the Control of Tropical Diseases (FUNCSETIn addition, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Biomedical Research Network Consortium for Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), the Tenerife Island Council, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Ministry of Health are collaborating.

This event brings together speakers specializing in these subjects, from universities such as those of Valencia, Granada, and La Laguna, affiliated with CIBERINFEC and CIBERESP, as well as the Carlos III Health Institute and the WHO.
