Secondary and high school students from schools throughout the Canary Islands participated today, Friday, February 21st, at the Guajara Campus, in the final phase of the XII Philosophical Olympiad of the Canary Islands<\/a>, This year's competition, which focuses on the theme of "Care," is divided into four categories: philosophical essays for high school students; moral problem-solving for 9th and 10th grade students; and philosophical photography and videos, open to both educational levels. The winners will participate in the national Olympiad, to be held in Palma de Mallorca on March 28th and 29th.<\/p>\n

The Vice-Rector for Students at the University of La Laguna, Rosario Hern\u00e1ndez, welcomed the new students to the Guajara Campus. Also participating in the welcoming ceremony were the Deputy Minister of Education for the Canary Islands Government, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cabrera; the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Javier Medina; the Vice-Dean of the Philosophy Department, Margarita V\u00e1zquez; and the Director of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, Education, and Language, Manuel Ledesma.<\/p>\n

The moral dilemmas competition began at 10:15 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Guajara Campus. The finalists were Jorge Pardavila Altab\u00e1s from Heidelberg School; Daniel Folgado Garc\u00eda from Costa Teguise High School; \u00c1ngel Dar\u00edo Fern\u00e1ndez from Los Realejos High School; Simon Kasenn Dunn from Mesa y L\u00f3pez High School; and Jia Ye Jiang Zheng from T\u00edas High School. The competition lasted 90 minutes, during which participants had to respond to a dilemma related to this year's theme. At 5:45 p.m., the three finalists were presented aloud, and a panel of judges questioned their authors to determine the winner.<\/p>\n

At the same time and in the same place, the essay exam was held, also on the topic of "Care." For an hour and a half, the participating students had to write an argument of no more than four pages, based on a suggested text or image. Afterwards, at 12:15, the students gave oral presentations of their essays, followed by questions from the examining board.<\/p>\n

The students participating in this test were \u00c1lvaro Ramos-Linares Medina, from Colegio Heidelberg; Martha L\u00f3pez P\u00e9rez, from IES Joaqu\u00edn Artiles; Elena Mart\u00edn Ponce, from IES Las Salinas; Galadriel Vidal Hern\u00e1ndez, from IES Padre Anchieta; Talghazit Mar\u00eda L\u00f3pez Benkhouya, from IES Puerto del Carmen; Daniel Su\u00e1rez Tompuri, from IES T\u00edas; Alexander Rodr\u00edguez, from IES Valle Guerra; and Mario Rodr\u00edguez Bonnet, Lyc\u00e9e Franc\u00e9s Internacional de Tenerife.<\/p>\n

Regarding the audiovisual categories, the presentations will begin at 4:00 PM, when the three finalist videos will be screened: \u201cCuidar-te\u201d by Petra Romero Garc\u00eda (IES Agust\u00edn Espinosa); \u201cPartida\u201d by Robert Hern\u00e1ndez P\u00e9rez (IES Valle Guerra); and \u201cLa importancia de cuidarse a uno mismo\u201d by Juan Jes\u00fas Mart\u00edn Guti\u00e9rrez (IES Valle Guerra). After the screening, each participant will have 5 minutes to present their work.<\/p>\n

Starting at 4:45 PM, the selected photographs will be presented, with five minutes allotted for each photographer to explain their work.
