Design of a Virus Capture and Inactivation System," at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of La Laguna. The thesis was supervised by [name missing]. Manuel Jesús Rodríguez, from the Department of Industrial Engineering.

This work is derived from an invention whose patented device It is capable of capturing and inactivating pathogenic biological agents, such as bacteria or viruses, in a fluid by passing it through one or more modular and configurable treatment zones. Patent P202000141, applied for on October 9, 2020, and granted by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office on September 22, 2022, has an estimated value, according to the appraisal carried out by the consultancy firm BHV Partners, of €2,477,158.58.

The initial idea for this device arose at the beginning of the pandemic and was motivated by the uncertainty surrounding how to eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the air of patients suffering from COVID-19. This initiative also responds to the need to determine, as quickly as possible, how to combat any future pathogen with the available resources, by achieving another of the project's objectives: the development of a device capable of being adapted and used as a testbed for obtaining, on the spot, possible configurations or biocidal agents capable of inactivating strains of SARS-CoV-2 or a possible future virus.

Its use as a testing device allows you to study the capacity of different physical and chemical treatments, as well as analyze the contact times and surfaces required, to capture and inactivate pathogenic biological agents in a continuous flow of gases or liquids; serving as a tool for its own definition and final consolidation according to each case.

The project began in March 2020, and two months later the two researchers had the first usable prototype. After initial tests with bacteria, they obtained very satisfactory results. As its inventors point out, the device was capable of inactivating microorganisms with an effectiveness of 99.991% in just one minute.

While awaiting SARS-CoV-2 samples, the engineers improved the device's design and developed a second prototype. In early July of that year, the Patent Technology Report (PTR) indicated that the device was novel with inventive step, and therefore potentially patentable.

In August 2020, trials were conducted with the first prototype and with SARS-CoV-2, confirming that the device is capable of deactivating the virus in an airflow with an efficiency of 99.991%. Furthermore, the ITP informed the researchers that the various uses described for the device—capturing and eliminating pathogens from fluids and testing biocidal materials—could also be patentable, as well as the specific methods or procedures for carrying out these uses.

Efraim Javier González ha leído recientemente en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de La Laguna su tesis doctoral…

[6,37,10
493,4043,4044,4045,4046,125
post-9498","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destacado","category-investigacion","category-portada-ull","tag-covid-19","tag-efraim-javier-gonzalez","tag-manuel-jesus-rodriguez","tag-patente","tag-sars-cov-2","tag-tesis-doctoral

https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Tesis-Efraim-Glez-07-300x200.jpg
["GET
