This, in turn, allows us to add hormones to them to study how they react.”.

One of the observations derived from the line of research undertaken by Álvarez and Presman This suggests that these proteins can mix in a controlled manner and cluster together within the same cell, a fact that complicates the process, since the effects of some hormones mix with those of others. "Why this happens, and in this way, is something about which very little is known, and it is partly due to the fact that they can associate," both experts indicate.

The discovery of this novel finding, "which doesn't align with what has been published in biology textbooks for decades," as both researchers point out, was made possible by the use of these new techniques, in which Presman is a world-renowned expert. These procedures are also very useful in the development of new drugs because they allow researchers to verify whether cells are performing functions different from their usual ones. Understanding how cells react to these signals, or whether they change their biology and function, is fundamental in the case of cortisol.

The hormone known as the stress hormone (glucocorticoids), essential for the body due to its regulatory role in metabolism, sleep, and immune function, among other vital functions, activates the protein on which both academic centers have focused their research. These hormones are “very important” because there are drugs, commonly used to treat people, that mimic their function, such as some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

According to Presman, the first potent anti-inflammatory drug used against COVID-19 was one of these non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which were able to significantly reduce mortality. “These are anti-inflammatory creams that, when they reach the cell, modify its function. What we are trying to do is understand in detail how this process occurs because, with a better understanding of the system, there are greater opportunities to manipulate it with other, even more effective drugs for controlling these types of reactions.”.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-77081" class="wp-image-77081 size-medium" src="https://www.ull.es/portal/noticias/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Diego-M.-Presman-10-300x200.jpg" alt="Diego M.
