The University of La Laguna has registered the carbon footprint generated by its activities during 2022 with the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This action, carried out by the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Infrastructure in conjunction with its Technical Office, marks a turning point in the environmental management of the academic institution, integrating this important environmental indicator. It also represents further evidence of the university's institutional commitment to sustainability.<\/p>\n
Registering the carbon footprint is a fundamental step in understanding and quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the activities of the University of La Laguna. This detailed knowledge will allow the university to design and implement more effective strategies to reduce its environmental impact and move towards a more sustainable model. The registration includes teaching and research activities carried out in the faculties, schools, and institutes, as well as residential buildings such as the halls of residence.<\/p>\n
The total calculated footprint is 3,209 tons of CO22<\/sub> equivalent. More specifically, the calculation of scope 1, which accounts for direct emissions, and scope 2, referring to indirect emissions from purchased energy, have been recorded.<\/p>\n Scope 3, which covers other indirect emissions, cannot yet be recorded due to the complexity of its calculation, which involves taking into account many more variables. In fact, no Spanish university has yet measured it, and in this regard, the next meeting of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) on Sustainability will begin to develop a methodology for its possible calculation.<\/p>\n In 2022, the CRUE (Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities) published a report on the water and energy consumption of Spanish universities between 2013 and 2022, in which 29 institutions participated. The University of La Laguna's environmental footprint is significantly lower than that of other Spanish academic institutions of similar size, likely due to its much lower daily use of air conditioning and heating. Even so, the Vice-Rector's office points out that the focus should not be so much on comparisons with other institutions, as this certification is a unique environmental indicator, one that the university should recognize its own improvements and use to set its own specific goals.<\/p>\n Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n The Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Infrastructure and the Technical Office plan to continue working on reducing the institutional carbon footprint this academic year, for which they will launch an internal campaign with advice for their community on how to act to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.<\/p>\n Regarding the calculation of the 2023 carbon footprint, it has not yet been carried out because the emission factor values that must be taken into account were published very recently by the ministry, so this is an action that will be undertaken in the coming months. It is expected to be lower than the 2022 footprint, since during that time the institution has implemented improvements, including the integration of solar panels in six buildings, as well as two heat pumps that reduce energy consumption.<\/p>\n Therefore, this first seal of 2022 only refers to the "Calculation" parameter, which highlights the fact that the institution has indeed carried out the necessary operations to parameterize its carbon footprint.
