The bare life of little girls. At the edge of the male world in /Tropique de la violence/ by Natacha Appanah
Abstract
This article aims at reading the novel Tropique de la violence, by the francophone Indo-Mauritian writer Nathacha Appanah, in the light of the notion of « bare life » developped by Giorgio Agamben in his study on the state of exception. This perspective in based on the fact that the novel is about the way of life of abandoned foreign minors in Mayotte, in the context of the Comorian exode, in whom the radically desappropriatted and desprotected condition of illegal migrants is exacerbated. As the diegetic world is exclusevely composed of male characters, I will examine the rôle of the female secondary characters and argue that Tropique de la violence allows us to revisit the notion of bare life under the criteria of age and gender.
