Imperative, future and iussive infinitive in an inscription from Mytilene
Abstract
On the basis of a decree from Mytilene, dated in the 4th century a. C., which combines imperatives, infinitives and futures as forms for expressing orders, the author investigates the possible differences between these three alternative procedures. After reviewing various previous proposals, it is concluded that the three procedures are basically interchangeable in this text, but are distributed according to a regular pattern for organizing the text.
