Greek inscriptions of the decoration of Schliemann’s house in Athens
Abstract
This work focuses on the study of the Greek inscriptions that form part of the decoration of the house that the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann had built in Athens between 1878 and 1880. They total 48 and are taken from the most important Greek authors, from the sentences of the seven wise men and from fragmentary authors of the Palatine Anthology, which demonstrate Schliemann's mastery of ancient Greek literature. The Greek text of the inscriptions, except for some typos, is quite correct. Most of them, apart from their functionality, are characterized by their preceptive and moral value and are located in the most visible places (even in the bathroom!).
