Víctor S. Martín was born in Mazo, La Palma (Canary Islands), Spain, and received his phD degree from the University of La Laguna, Tenerife in 1978 under the guidance of Professors Antonio González, Julio D. Martín and Manuel Norte. From 1980-82 he was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor K. Barry Sharpless in Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He moved to the University of La Laguna as Associate Professor in 1984. In 1998 was promoted to Scientific Researcher of the CSIC of Spain. Since 1992 he holds a Full Professor position at University of La Laguna. His research interest includes asymmetric synthesis, methodology and total synthesis of bioactive natural products. During the periods 1995-99, 2001-10 he has been Director of the Institute of Bio-Organic Antonio González (IUBO-AG). 2016 Félix Serratosa Medal from the Organic Chemistry Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

Miguel A. Ramírez was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), Spain in 1952, and received his phD degree from the University of La Laguna, Tenerife in 1977 under the guidance of Professors Antonio González, Julio D. Martín and Dr. Cirilo Pérez. From 1979-81 he was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Marc Julia in the École Normal Supérieure in Paris, France. In 1982 he moved to the University of La Laguna as Assistant Professor in the Organic Chemistry Department. In 1985 he was promoted to Associated Professor. His research interest includes the interrelationships between molecular structure, energy and reactivity, using computational studies. From 2002 he has been Secretary of the Institute of Bio-Organic “Antonio González” (IUBO-AG).

Juan I. Padrón was born in Caracas (Venezuela) in December 1966. In 1968, his family returned back to Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). He studied chemistry at the University of La Laguna (B.Sc., 1990), and received his Ph.D. degree in 1995, from the same University, under the guidance of Professors Jesús Trujillo Vázquez and Julio Delgado Martín. He was a postdoctoral fellow of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science at Columbia University from January 1996 to December 1997, working under the supervision of Professor Samuel J. Danishefsky. In 1998, he returned back to Canary Island, and joined Jaime Bermejo´s Group (C.S.I.C). In 2004, he won a contract of the “Ramón y Cajal “programme, created to boost Spanish science. In 2008 he promoted to Senior Scientist (C.S.I.CHis research interest is focused in the development of new methodologies to form C-C bonds using sustainable metal catalysis and their applications in the synthesis of oxa and aza-cycles through Prins cyclizations. The last aim is the applications in the natural product synthesis and the biological evaluation of the synthesized products.

Celina García was born in Tenerife (Canary Islands). She studied Chemistry at the University of La Laguna (B. Sc., 1996) and received her Ph.D. degree at the same University in 2001, under the guidance of Professor Víctor S. Martín. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, she joined the Professor Patrick J. Walsh laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA) in July 2001. From 2005-2010, she was hired by the University of La Laguna as a researcher under the "Ramón y Cajal Program". Since 2011, she is "Profesor Contratado Doctor Tipo I" in the Organic Chemistry Department at the University of La Laguna. Her research interest is focused on the development of methodology for application to the synthesis of natural products, especially those with some significant biological activities.

José M. Padrón (Puerto de la Cruz, 1968) graduated with Honours in Pharmacy (1991) at ULL. Afterwards he gained a Doctorate in the field of Organic Chemistry (1996) at IUBO-AG, during which he completed the asymmetric synthesis of a variety of biologically active molecules. He worked at the VUmc in Amsterdam (NL) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Prof. G. J. Peters getting insight in the screening of anticancer drugs. In 1998, he moved to DSM Research (NL) to work on enantioselective membrane separations with Prof. J. G. de Vries. Back to Spain in 2001, he worked at DSM Deretil in the production of β-lactam antibiotics. Since 2004 he works in drug design & discovery of new anticancer drugs. He was appointed in 2006 Principal Scientist of BioLab, the Biological Evaluation Laboratory join venture of ICIC and ULL.

Romen Carrillo received his B.Sc. in chemistry at the University of La Laguna (Spain), where he also obtained his Ph.D. in 2007 working on novel chiral receptors for amino acids under the supervision of Prof. Víctor S. Martín and Dr. Tomás Martín. After spending some time in Prof. Colin Nuckolls' group at Columbia University, New York (USA), he moved to the University of Edinburgh (UK) thanks to a postdoctoral fellowship from the Ramón Areces Foundation, where he worked in Prof. David Leigh's group on molecular shuttles and lineal molecular motors. In 2010, he returned to Spain and joined the Instituto de Productos Naturales y Agrobiología (IPNA-CSIC), where he mainly studied novel cooperative binding events. Finally, he joined Instituto Universitario de Bio- Organica (IUBO) and Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas de Canarias (CIBICAN) in 2013, where he is currently developing several research lines such as greener synthetic methodologies, supramolecular functional systems and novel approaches to medicinal chemistry.

Fernando Pinacho Crisóstomo received his B.Sc. in chemistry at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and his M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry under the guidance of Profs. Jose Tercio Barbosa Ferreira and Arlene Gonçalves Correa at Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil) on the synthesis of natural products. He subsequently moved to Spain (Tenerife, Canary Islands) and started his Ph.D. at University of La Laguna under Prof. Victor Martín and Dr. Tomás Martín. His thesis focused on the development of synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of cyclic ethers. As postdoctoral fellow, he joined the Prof. Julius Rebek, Jr. laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute in 2007 working in the field of Supramolecular Chemistry. In June of 2008 he started a new project at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the Medicinal Chemistry area with the Prof. Ziwei Huang, designing new inhibitors for proteins involved in the apoptotic mechanism. After a brief period at the Moores Cancer Center (University of California San Diego) developing polymeric nanoparticles as drug delivery system, he moved back to Tenerife as researcher fellow in the program JAE at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IPNA-CSIC). Currently, as a hired researcher at IUBO-ULL, his general interest is to design new molecular receptors for charged or neutral organic molecules using new synthetic methods to build up molecular complexity from simple and readily available molecules. Also in the scope of his research, he is interested in developing covalent capsules and evaluate their application as molecular containers for CO2.

Julio Rodríguez López was born in Jerez de la Frontera (Andalucia, Spain) in 1985. He received his B.Sc. in chemistry at the University of Cádiz (Spain) in 2008, whereby gain a special mention in the National Awards for Excellence in the University Academic Performance. In 2009, he received a FPI grant from the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (MECyD) and moved to Canary Island to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry at University of La Laguna under the supervision of Prof. Víctor Martín and Dr. Tomás Martín. His research interest is focused in the development of new methodologies to trigger epoxide-opening cascade reactions and in their application to the synthesis of marine natural products.

Sergio J. Álvarez-Méndez was born in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) in 1987. He graduated with Honours in Chemistry from University of La Laguna in 2010. Afterwards he received a FPU grant from the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (MECyD) and he is currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Víctor S. Martín and Dra. Celina García. In 2013, he carried out a 3 months-research stay at Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany), under the supervision of Dr. Alcarazo. He has been member of the organizing committee of the Annual Congress of Students of the Chemistry School of University of La Laguna since 2012, and Delegate of the Ph.D. students of the Organic Chemistry Department since October 2011. His research interest is focused in the formation of densely substituted hydroxylactones and ether rings, and in their application to the synthesis of natural products.

Alberto J. Martín-Rodríguez graduated from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2008. He combined his research at the Department of Chemistry of the ULPGC with the obtaining of a Master's Degree in Oceanography (2011, ULPGC) and in Biotechnology (2012, University of La Laguna), with the best academic record. He joined Prof. Víctor S. Martín's group in 2011. He currently pursues a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Víctor S. Martín and Prof. José J. Fernández (Marine Natural Products Group). His research lines include: a) the screening of natural and synthetic compounds for antifouling activity, particularly as biofilm and quorum-sensing (QS) disruptors; b) the characterization of the molecular basis of bacterial biofilm formation through mutational and genetic analyses; and c) the elucidation of the mode-of-action of QS disruptors in bacterial models. He has conducted research stays at the Estación Experimental del Zaidín-CSIC (Granada, Spain, 2014) and the Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden, 2015). Since 2012, he holds a 2+2 fellowship from the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands

Daniel A. Cruz Perdomo was born in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) in 1987. In 2011, he received his B. Sc. in Chemistry in La Laguna University, obtaining the M. Sc. in Chemistry at the same University one year later. Afterwards became a Ph. D. student in La Laguna University under the supervision of Víctor S. Martín (La Laguna University) and Juan I. Padrón Peña (Instituto de Productos Naturales y Agrobiología-CSIC). Since 2013 is recipient of a FPI grant from Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). Most part of his work is focused on Sustainable Metal Catalysis with Iron salts, and the synthesis of medium size heterocycles using these greener methodologies.

Juan Miguel López Soria was born in Albacete (Castilla La-Mancha, Spain) in 1988. He received his B. Sc. in Chemistry in La Laguna University, obtaining the M. Sc. in Chemistry at the same University one year later. Then, he started his Ph. D. under the supervision of Víctor S. Martín (La Laguna University) and Juan I. Padrón Peña (Instituto de productos Naturales y Agrobiología-CSIC). The next year he carried out a three months-research internship at Bayer-HealthCare Research Center in Wuppertal (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany), under the supervisión of Dr. Henrik Teller. Currently he is recipient of a Fundación Caja Canarias-La Caixa grant. His Ph. D. studies are focused in Sustainable Metal Catalysis using Iron salts and synthesis of medium-size oxacycles. In addition, he is responsible for the management, preparation and shipment of molecules for biological assays carried out by the pharmaceutical company Lilly.

BSc. Gastón Silveira Dorta was born in Las Piedras (Uruguay). He studied chemistry at the Universidad de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay. In 2008 and 2009 he worked for his undergraduate project at The Institute of Biological Chemistry (IQB), entitled Synthesis of thionitrite derivatives of tocopherol under the supervision of Dr. Virginia Lopéz. During 2009 and 2010 he got an internship at Dr. Fernando Garcia Tellado laboratory at Instituto de Productos Naturales (IPNA-CSIC) in the project entitled Organocatalysis on water, Tenerife, Spain. In 2011, he moved to Spain to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Biomedicine at La Laguna University. He won a predoctoral fellowship from the Gobierno de Canarias (ACIISI-FPI) and joined BioLab and Synthesis of Bioactive Products at IUBO, under the direction of José M. Padrón and Victor S. Martín. His research activity is currently focused in Design, synthesis and molecular pharmacology of new antitumor analogs of sphingosine applying amino acids as starting material and development of new Chiral Derivatizing Agents by NMR technics.

Diego M. Monzon was born in 1991 in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). He graduated in Chemistry from the University of La Laguna in 2013. In 2014, he obtained the M. Sc. in Chemistry from the same University. He is currently doing a PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, under the supervision of Prof. Victor S. Martin and Dr. Romen Carrillo. His current work focuses on developing synthetic methodologies based on the use of vitamin C to obtain useful compounds with various applications in several fields of science.
