Mathematics Section

The dissemination of the Mathematics Degree studies at the University of La Laguna among potential new students is carried out through the various channels and mechanisms available to the university and the faculty:

Furthermore, the Faculty of Sciences, in its Mathematics Section, has been developing, and will continue to develop, a series of activities on an annual basis to disseminate various aspects of the studies and the profession, among which the following stand out:

  • The Mathematics Week features activities to promote mathematics, attended and attended by secondary and high school students from schools throughout the Canary Islands Autonomous Community.
  • Introductory Course to University Mathematics: This course is designed for newly admitted students in all degree programs that include a basic mathematics course in their first year. It is organized by the Mathematics Department. Pre-registration and enrollment take place at the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna.
  • Visits to secondary and high school education centers: faculty members visit non-university education centers to inform students, teachers and counselors about the training offered in the Mathematics Section.
  • Mathematical Experience: aimed at high school students at the end of the school year, it consists of a program of talks and workshops over three to five days.

Welcome plan for new students

Among other activities, the following stand out:

  • Welcome days for new students, with presentations of the different services available to them: use of the library, computer rooms, Wi-Fi access, administrative management, scholarships, interdisciplinary training,… and a visit to the faculty facilities.
  • Personalized Tutoring Program: Since 2004, the Faculty of Mathematics has implemented a Personalized Tutoring Program for all its training programs, and in particular for the Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. Through this program, each student has a tutor responsible for their personal monitoring, advising them on both academic matters (organization of study time, number of credits to enroll in, exam dates, etc.) and non-academic matters (personal situations, unforeseen difficulties, etc.). These tutors facilitate the configuration of elective pathways consistent with the various professional profiles for which the Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics prepares students: academic (teaching and research), technical (industry, IT and telecommunications) and social (finance and consulting).

Students of the Degree in Mathematics

The student will receive guidance according to the topic in question:

  • Mobility programs: the professors responsible for the national and international programs inform and guide students on the agreements signed, procedures for applying for a place, scholarship applications, etc.
  • External internships: the Internship Committee has among its objectives the development of guidance actions for students regarding external internships integrated into the study plan.
  • Master's and Doctorate: the head of the master's program provides information on postgraduate and doctoral studies to which the Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics grants access.
  • Career opportunities: throughout the year various activities such as talks and round tables are held aimed at final-year students, with possible career opportunities.

Furthermore, all students at the University of La Laguna can access the services of two specialized advisory services:

  • The Psychopedagogical Counseling Service aims to help students who are experiencing difficulties in both decision-making and learning. In addition, it provides data and reports to the information department and offers personalized support to students.
  • The Legal Advice Office offers free individualized attention on any query, in its legal aspect, related to the stay at the University, whether or not it is of an academic nature.
