Resources materials

The Philology section of the Faculty of Humanities has sufficient and appropriate resources for the delivery of the degrees in Spanish: Language and LiteratureClassical StudiesApplied Francophone Studies y English Studies, in addition to the double degrees in Spanish: Language and Literature - Classical Studies y English Studies - Applied Francophone Studies. The section also has numerous spaces that provide support to other academic units such as university institutes, higher education centers, etc. The section's administration regularly carries out improvements to its facilities and maintains the materials necessary for the proper functioning of the tasks assigned to each space.

The Guajara Campus of the University of La Laguna, located in the area of the same name, is home to most of the humanities degree programs. There you'll find the Main Lecture Hall, the true epicenter of daily academic activity, as it houses a significant number of classrooms, as well as other spaces that are in high demand for hosting events such as conferences, congresses, and various types of meetings: the Aula Magna (Main Auditorium) and the Graduation Hall. Next to this building is a smaller one called the Annex. This two-story building is dedicated exclusively to teaching activities. The campus is organized around shared services for the Departments of Philology, Philosophy, Geography and History, and the Faculty of Psychology, along with other facilities specific to each department. Within each department, you can also find shared facilities or facilities linked to a single department.

Between the Main Lecture Hall and its Annex, there is a capacity of 3,678 seats, distributed across 46 classrooms, with the characteristics specified in the attached documents. These lecture halls are open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. During the academic year, the Philology Department conducts its activities in 17 classrooms available for morning and afternoon sessions in the Main Lecture Hall, in addition to 18 more spaces in the Philology Department building. The classrooms are equipped with screens, computers, webcams, video projectors, and sound systems, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity provided by the University of La Laguna's technical teams through its Information and Communication Technologies Service (STIC), which supplies the standard software for the computers installed in the classrooms. Facilities are also available to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.

The Graduation Hall, in the shape of a semicircle, has a capacity of almost one hundred seats. The Aula Magna, whose structure resembles a conventional auditorium (stage with a presidential table and audio and video equipment), has about 650 seats and is frequently used, apart from academic activities, as a theater, for music concerts, graduation ceremonies, informational assemblies, etc.

Other facilities at the Guajara Campus are designed to enhance the comfort and experience of students, faculty, and the general public. These include a spacious cafeteria/dining hall, ATMs, and various vending machines offering drinks and pre-packaged snacks. All floors feature benches, large windows, and collaborative workspaces, providing students with a comfortable environment that enhances their time on campus.

Just a few meters from all these facilities, the Humanities campus also has a Student Services building, the result of an agreement between the University of La Laguna and a financial institution. This building offers a study room with 220 reading spaces and two rooms with approximately one hundred computers. Special mention should be made of the General and Humanities Library (BULL) building, which houses the general reference collection on the ground floor; the collection dedicated to the Canary Islands, which is of great interest to our degree programs; the Humanities Periodicals Room on the second floor; and the Geography and History, Philology, and Philosophy and Psychology libraries, located on the third, fourth, and fifth floors, respectively. The Philology collection covers 1,136 square meters and includes a reading room with 264 spaces and two offices for group work. Its collection comprises over 72,500 volumes and monographs. The General Library also offers users a total of 11 cars, These rooms can sometimes be used as classrooms, especially for practical sessions or bibliographic fieldwork. Users have direct access to the shelves and bibliographic resources, although qualified library staff are available on each floor. The Humanities Periodicals Room offers free access to over 3,000 titles, of which more than 1,000 are current subscriptions and approximately 2,000 are out-of-print collections. In addition, the BULL maintains a catalog of digital publications providing access to a significant number of open-access electronic journals, as well as to major international platforms and databases, both free and subscription-based (DOAJ, REDALyC, Latindex, CINDOC-CSIC, EBSCO, ISI, JSTOR, Scopus, Academia Search Premier, etc.).

The University of La Laguna Library has implemented several initiatives to adapt to the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA). These measures aim not only to facilitate access to and use of its resources (links to the core bibliography included in the course syllabi), but also to equip its reading rooms with the necessary tools for study and research. The library staff plays a vital role in this process, continuously participating in training courses to adapt to the new teaching and bibliographic realities.

The Departmental Building of the Philology Section, structured on four floors, has been adapted over the years since its opening in 1992 to meet the evolving needs of the time. It features a large common area called the Audiovisual Room, with a capacity of approximately 88 people, fully equipped for educational and academic activities such as conferences, doctoral thesis defenses, and more. The rest of the building is divided among the three departments with the largest presence in the philology degree programs and the section's common areas. The basement level houses a large number of classrooms of varying sizes and functions. These include meeting rooms, seminar rooms for each degree program, rooms for the Master's Program in Conference Interpreting (MIC), a theater room where the philology theater group performs, and storage areas for various center equipment. On the ground floor are the lobby, the reception area, classrooms B0-01 and B0-03, a meeting room (seating 12), the Quality Control Room for the department (seating 16), the Phonetics Classroom, and the Phonetics Laboratory, which administratively belongs to the General Research Support Service (SEGAI). The offices of the vice-deans are also located in this area.

The other floors (1, 2, and 3) house the departmental offices (Spanish Philology; English and German Philology; French, Classical, Arabic, and Romance Philology) and the offices of a large portion of the faculty who teach undergraduate courses, as well as other facilities such as meeting rooms and small to medium-sized classrooms that support numerous practical classes and seminars. It should be noted that the departments with the heaviest teaching loads in undergraduate programs have made a significant financial investment in recent years to adequately equip their offices for student meetings. This greatly facilitates communication between faculty and students, as it eliminates the need for students to travel long distances to attend tutorials, thus enabling more personalized instruction in small groups—a recognized quality element within the European Higher Education Area and, more specifically, in our university's Tutorial Action Plan (POAT).

The University of La Laguna has a Maintenance Service for its infrastructure, while computer networks are the responsibility of the ULL's Information and Communication Technologies Service (STIC). Minor daily maintenance, especially for computers, is carried out by each center or department, or through the Vice-Dean's office, which contracts the service to local companies or specialized technicians.

The Humanities campus opened in 1992 and was designed with the needs of students with mobility issues in mind. In fact, it complies with the provisions of Law 51/2003, of December 2, on equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and accessibility for people with disabilities. There is access for special transport right to the building entrances, access ramps inside and outside the lecture halls, restrooms adapted for wheelchair users, freight elevators, and elevators with sliding doors. The University of La Laguna itself maintains a Program for Students with Disabilities, under the Vice-Rectorate for Students, and the lecture halls have computer programs available for students with visual impairments.
