The doctoral program follows the Official Doctoral Studies Regulations of the ULL, which in Chapter III, Articles 23 to 32, refers to the presentation and defense of doctoral theses, in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011. In this regard, it regulates the prerequisites that the research project must meet, the proposal and appointment of external evaluators, the thesis evaluation committee, the thesis defense, the different possible distinctions, joint supervision, and the thesis modality by compilation of publications.

Article 23 of these regulations allows for each doctoral program to have specific requirements that must be met prior to submission. In the case of this program, this means the following:

Prior to the start of the procedure for designating external evaluators, it is necessary to have a Journal Citation Reports (JCR) publication or an accepted patent to authorize the defense.

For the thesis by compilation, as a general rule, three publications in scientific journals listed in the JCR journal list are required.

Alternatively, the following minimum requirements apply: two of the publications must be articles published in journals indexed in the JCR (Q1-Q2 quartiles) or articles associated with conferences indexed in the ICORE (A*/A rankings), or a combination of both. The third publication, at a minimum, must be associated with a journal indexed in Scopus or a conference indexed in the ICORE (A/B rankings). The doctoral candidate must be the first or second author of the publications.
