High-ability students have different characteristics at a fundamentally cognitive level, which requires an educational response adapted to their talent.
The University of La Laguna is a pioneer in providing specialized educational support for gifted students, using various approaches. Firstly, the University of La Laguna has been running two extracurricular programs: the Comprehensive Program for Gifted Students (PIPAC), for primary and secondary school students, now in its 23rd year, and the ATENEA-ULL program, for university students, currently in its eighth year and the first of its kind in Spain to provide educational support for this student population.
In addition, the ULL has the Cultural Classroom for High Abilities and Talent, which is responsible for disseminating knowledge about high intellectual abilities in various ways: talks to teachers of various educational levels, courses and workshops for university teachers and outreach events, such as the International Conference on the Overview of Intervention in High Abilities, which is held biennially, with its seventh edition having been held in October 2026.
Within this interest, it was also necessary to address training on high abilities, as it is a need that is demanded from many different forums, since there is very little, if any, regulated training on this subject in Spanish and international universities.
