Overview

The course aims to provide teachers and educational professionals with the knowledge, tools and strategies necessary to provide comprehensive and inclusive support to students with cancer, understanding the medical, emotional, social and educational implications of the disease.

The aim is for students to be able to:

  • To learn about childhood cancer, its treatments, aftereffects and possible repercussions on learning.
  • Understanding the emotional and psychosocial impact of the disease on children, adolescents, families, siblings and the educational community.
  • Design and implement inclusive educational strategies, adapting methodologies and coordinating different educational and care resources.
  • Improve communication and awareness skills to address cancer in the school context in an appropriate and respectful manner.
  • Promoting the well-being and self-care of educational professionals in situations of illness, relapse, and grief.
  • Integrate learning through an applied final project, oriented towards the design of a real educational intervention in a school.

Overall, the aim is to promote a coordinated, flexible, inclusive educational response focused on the needs of students with cancer and their environment.

Goals

To train future education professionals to understand the impact of childhood cancer on students, develop inclusive pedagogical responses and promote an empathetic, educated and informed school culture.

Access requirements

Be a student of the following degrees: Pedagogy, Early Childhood Education Teacher, Primary Education Teacher and/or Physical Activity and Sports Sciences.

Contents

Module 1. Childhood Cancer: Theoretical Framework.

  • What is childhood cancer?.
  • Current data.
  • Treatments, after-effects and learning difficulties.

Module 2. Emotional and psychosocial impact.

  • Experiences of the child, adolescent and family (diagnosis, medical tests…)
  • Brothers and sisters and friends.
  • Self-care for educational professionals.
  • Reintegration into the classroom.
  • Grief and relapses.

Module 3. Inclusive educational strategies.

  • Methodological adaptations (educational needs of students with cancer).
  • Coordination of hospital classrooms, educational center, home tutoring, online teaching center.
  • Emotional attention in the classroom.

Module 4. Communication and awareness.

  • How to talk about cancer with children and teenagers.
  • Design of awareness-raising activities.

Module 5. Applied final project.

  • Design of a real intervention in an educational center.

Methodology and activities

  • Lectures/expository method: presentation or explanation by the teaching staff.
  • Seminars: completing exercises, solving problems or practical cases, others.
  • Individual work: individual preparation of assignments/projects/reports, portfolio, …
  • Group work: group preparation of assignments, projects/reports, …
  • Tutoring: instruction period in which teachers and students interact with the aim of reviewing and discussing materials and topics presented in class.
  • Active methodologies: cooperative learning, project-based learning, flipped classroom, service learning, game-based learning, case studies, problem solving… These are aimed at making learning a participatory process and are based on student agency.
