The president of the Social Council of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Almeida, and the secretary of the body recently attended the presentation of the proposed new funding agreement for the Canary Islands' public universities for the period 2027-2030, held at the headquarters of the Canary Islands Government. The presentation was convened by the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, Migdalia Machín. The president and vice-president of the Social Council of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria also participated in the meeting.
During the presentation, the councilor outlined the main points of the proposal, which establishes a new multi-year funding framework for the Canary Islands' public universities and incorporates a 16% increase in regional funding over the agreement's term. The document also proposes a new funding structure designed to strengthen the universities' financial stability, ensure their structural needs are met, and promote more predictable planning of their activities.
The proposal also includes mechanisms to address the ordinary operating needs of the Canary Islands public universities, strengthen their planning capacity, and link part of the funding to the fulfillment of certain objectives, within the new model planned for the period 2027-2030.
At the end of the meeting, the president of the Social Council of the University of La Laguna thanked the Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture for presenting the proposal and for the opportunity for the social councils to learn about the document firsthand, highlighting the importance of moving towards a stable funding framework that provides certainty and promotes the planning of the Canary Islands' public universities.
