Abstract

This deals with the reappraisal of an important pictorial activity, such as Anamorphosis: an abhorrent but controlled deformation, the restitution of which is perfect when the position from which one views it is changed. This pictorial facet has been somewhat discredited and rather forgotten in the great History of Painting. Certain thoughts on its history and techniques are given. We believe it could arouse in the Art student, a renewed interest in such a fascinating period, the study of controlled deformations of art and its surprising restitutions; especially today, when so many morphological distortions are used without clues to its deformation. When we are besieged by new graphic technologies with their facile resources, forgetting or not knowing of this historical fact can bring about a serious void in teaching, in providing a fundamental evaluation of, and deeper insight into, the art of visual transformation.
