El género gramatical de los nombres de ríos de la primera declinación
Abstract
Owing to the progressive tendency of feminine nouns to come under the first declension, those masculine ones which are still found so because of "natural gender". Apart from these, the only important exception is that of names of rivers ending in -a. An analysis of a few of them offers a good example of the struggle between their masculine lexical element and their feminine form. Traces of the victory of the latter are still visible in some romance languages (v.gr., fr. la Seine < Sēquăna).
