The polysemy of σφυγμός in the Corpus Hippocraticum (II)
Abstract
The second part of this study analyses the terms σφυγμός and παλμός included in two treatises of the Corpus Hyppocraticum: Coan Praenotions and On the Diseases of Women. Both terms do not appear in any passage simultaneously, therefore the similarity of their meanings does not help to clarify the semenatics of the first term. Moreover, several types of pulsations which will later be incorporated by Galen into his sphygmic classification have been observed. Finally, no passage concerning σφυγμός considered as a normal pulse has been found.
