Identity and personality in Oedypus and Segismundo
Abstract
Oedipus and Segismundo do not know their true identity and as a result experience suffering. Their personalities have bright spots and shadows but they do not follow the same path. Sophocles writes a tragedy and Calderón a comedy because the two periods are essentially different. For both authors, change is a fundamental process and the desire for knowledge something which entails a high price.
