Colón en el cine español: tres miradas en el tiempo
Abstract
The Discovery of America is a very important and controversial episode of our national history. This achievement has been presented some times by the Spanish cinematography. This paper is based on three films which present in an extensive manner this episode: La Vida de Cristóbal Colón y su descubrimiento de América by Émile Bourgueois (1916); Alba de América by Juan de Orduña (1951) and 1492, la Conquista del Paraíso (1492, the Conquest of Paradise) by Ridley Scott (1992). The differents ways to deal with this episode in the three films are analyzed taking in mind the historical time of each film: a monarchy, a dictatorial state and a democracy.
