From sea to sea. Castilian ports in the Late Middle Ages

This volume contains the conclusions of the research project HAR 2010-17693 of the consolidated research group "Castile and the Sea in the Late Middle Ages" of the University Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies of the academic institution.

The work offers the contributions of a dozen national and international experts on the port reality of the period studied, updating the available knowledge on these economic, social and political spaces.

The work is divided into three parts. The first analyzes the role of ports in shaping the administrative and political structures of the period, with monographic studies on the urban geography of port towns and the fiscal structures deployed there. The second is dedicated to port networks and the transportation systems that connected the different localities, while the third addresses the understanding of the economic and social dynamics that occurred in these ports.

The consolidated research group "Castile and the Sea in the Late Middle Ages", coordinated by the Professor of Medieval History, Eduardo Aznar Vallejo, has been developing cutting-edge research in its field of study for more than a decade, and is one of the main groups dedicated to maritime history in the medieval period throughout the country, as evidenced by the successive National R&D Plan projects that it has been developing uninterruptedly since 2002.

In short, this is a novel contribution of undeniable historiographical value that updates our knowledge of the port reality of late medieval Castile, offering a comprehensive synthesis that shows the importance of the sea in the transformations of all kinds that took place at the end of the Middle Ages.
