Guidance and tutoring

Biology Section

The Biology Section develops each year the Guidance and Tutorial Action Plan (POAT). This program is aimed at first-year students of the Bachelor's Degree in Biology and its objectives are to respond to the needs and challenges that newly admitted university students must face in their process of adapting to the university environment, and it covers the following aspects:

  • Improve the organization and development of guidance and tutoring activities at the center, clarifying objectives, structuring the various actions, specifying functions and responsibilities, and optimizing the coordination and evaluation mechanisms of the implemented actions.
  • To facilitate the integration and adaptation of students to the environment of the Biology Section and the University of La Laguna.
  • To encourage students to develop habits of reflection, dialogue, and autonomous learning
  • To guide students throughout the development of their educational process and in making academic and professional decisions.
  • To help students resolve the difficulties that arise during their training and to motivate them towards achieving their educational goals.
  • Minimize the risk of academic failure and/or dropout.
  • Teach students to plan their learning process.
  • To help students in their professional training through guided internships.
  • Inform the student about the demands and characteristics of the labor market.

The specific objectives to be achieved are:

  • To improve the adaptation of students to the University and the Faculty, promoting their integration into university life and into the bodies of participation and management.
  • To guide students on the resources and facilities of the Faculty, facilitating the channels and rules that guarantee their availability and good use.
  • To offer training and support to students for the acquisition of strategies that contribute to improving access to and management of information and autonomous learning.
  • Promote students' skills for the proper planning and use of their study time.
  • To help students acquire skills, abilities and capacities for academic and professional decision-making.
  • To guide students on employment options and continuing education.

In the development of POAT of the Biology Section Three main groups of activities are established: Career Tutoring, Mentoring, and Guidance Activities.

The Career Mentoring This process is carried out at the degree level. At the beginning of each academic year, each student is assigned a tutor who will be responsible for informing them about the various services and opportunities offered by the Center, as well as the processes and regulations that apply. The tutor will also promote the student's personal responsibility and commitment to their academic training, guide them in improving their academic performance, and monitor their academic progress.

The Mentoring This program is run by peer mentors, upper-level students who advise first-year students and help them adapt to university life. The peer mentor will carry out their work through a series of scheduled meetings to address day-to-day issues and offer advice based on their accumulated experience, in coordination with the program advisors.

The Orientation Activities These activities are organized by the Faculty. This dimension addresses student needs related to information (Information Guide, consultations on course credit transfers, courses, financial aid) and supplementary training (courses, workshops for students). These activities must be linked to those carried out by the ULL services that provide guidance.

  • The student's commitment to the Guidance and Tutoring Program is:
  • Attend scheduled meetings with the career tutor and the peer tutor.
  • Attend the Orientation activities.

Taken together, this will amount to a total 30 hours (talks, mentoring, and tutoring). At the end of the academic year, POAT participants will be asked to evaluate the program.

  • Participation in the POAT will be recognized with 3 ECTS credits.
  • Participation as a peer tutor will be recognized with up to 1 ECTS credit.
  • To participate, contact the POAT Coordinator, Professor Guido Santos (gsantos@ull.edu.es)

For any questions, you can contact the POAT Coordinator or any member of the Dean's team.
