Canary Islands Flora Garden

Asteraceae

Artemisia thuscula Cav.

Canary incense, southernwood

An endemic shrub of the Canary Islands with a wide ecological range, rarely exceeding 2 meters in height, and ash-gray in color. Its leaves are alternate, bipinnatisect, and small to medium in size. Its flowers are very small and clustered in small heads, which in turn are grouped into synflorescences, usually terminal. This plant produces a large amount of biomass and, in arid conditions, enters a summer dormancy period, sprouting again with the first autumn rains. It readily colonizes degraded soils.
