Rosaceae

Bencomia caudata (Aiton) Webb & Berthel.

Bencomia de monte, zumaquero

A shrub that can reach up to 4 m in height. It has large, imparipinnate, compound leaves with petiolulate, oval leaflets that have an acute apex and serrated margins, green on the upper surface and grayish on the underside. The flowers are inconspicuous but clustered in showy, hanging catkin-like inflorescences on different plants (dioecious). The fruits are subglossal, very small, greenish, and somewhat fleshy, turning yellowish and wrinkled when ripe (resembling small chickpeas). This species is endemic to Macaronesia.
