Campanulaceae

Canarina canariensis

Bicacarera, bicácaro

The bicacarera is a semi-vine-like herbaceous plant that goes dormant underground during the summer, reduced to a large rhizome. Its stems, which can grow several meters long, have opposite, arrowhead-shaped leaves that are green on the upper surface and grayish-green on the underside. It is easily recognized by its large, bell-shaped flowers, which range in color from orange to red, sometimes even within the flower itself. Its ripe fruits are orange, similar to figs, and edible.
