Tabaibal cardonal

In the lower part of the islands, linked to cliffs and windswept coastal points in the north and from the coast up to 500 m high in the south of the islands, the low scrubland that dominates the landscape has had to adapt to a semi-arid climate, where rainfall is scarce and concentrated in a short period of time, with long droughts abounding.

This ecosystem is called the Basal Zone or Cardonal-Tabaibal and is characterized by annual rainfall between 50 and 300 mm and an average annual temperature above 19°C. It has high levels of sunshine, stony-clayey, saline, and calcareous soils. The plants that grow here have a number of adaptations for survival.
