A subshrub that can exceed 1.5 m in height and is highly branched, its most distinctive characteristic being its strong and peculiar camphor scent. The stem is woody and polygonal at the base, with younger stems becoming quadrangular. The leaves are petiolate and trifoliolate, with the terminal leaflet being much larger, lanceolate-acuminate with serrated margins, glandular hairs on the underside, and prominent veins. The flowers have pink corollas and are grouped in terminal, globose spikes. It is a great attractant for butterflies and is frequently visited by the hummingbird hawk-moth.
