Apocynaceae

Ceropegia dichotoma Haw.

Cardoncillo, executioner, dogkiller

The cardoncillo grows dichotomously, meaning its stems branch in pairs. It is characterized by its fleshy stems, which are green when the plant has water and gray when water is scarce. Its leaves, which are quickly deciduous, are opposite, narrowly lanceolate, and dark green. Its flowers, which are tubular at the base and have slightly less than half of the upper petals free but fused again at the apex, are creamy yellow. Its fruits are two long horns, inside which are numerous seeds with long hairs that allow them to be dispersed by the wind.
