Fabaceae

Chamaecytisus proliferus(L. f.) Link subsp. angustifolius (Kuntze)

G. Kunkel
Pine forest broom, white broom of Tenerife

This shrub can grow to over 5 meters in height, depending on the environmental conditions where it grows. It typically branches from the base, and its branches may have a pendulous appearance. Its leaves are trifoliolate, with narrowly lanceolate, light green leaflets. The pinkish-white flowers are grouped in relatively few inflorescences at the base of the leaves. Its fruits are grayish, slightly hairy legumes containing medium-sized seeds that turn dark brown to almost black when ripe. This plant, like other members of the legume family, is capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the soil.
