Canary Islands Flora Garden

Cistaceae

Cistus monspeliensis L.

White rockrose

This shrub grows naturally along the Mediterranean coasts of southern Europe and North Africa, as well as in Madeira and the Canary Islands. It rarely exceeds one meter in height and is highly branched. Its leaves are narrowly lanceolate, sticky, and have a pungent aroma. Its flowering, which typically occurs between late spring and early summer, is profuse and consists of medium-sized flowers with white petals and yellow stamens. Interestingly, in nature it can be observed parasitized by the plant Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L., commonly known as the rockrose plant.
