The common name of this plant, endemic to the Canary Islands, comes from the Tamazight word Am-agant, meaning granular. It is a shrub that can reach up to 2 meters in height, with broad, dark green, hairy, and rough-to-the-touch leaves. Its flowers, which cluster at the tips of the branches, are large, showy, and violet or bright pink with numerous yellow stamens. Native to pine forests, it is also found in transitional areas to humid woodlands, growing at altitudes from 300 to 1800 meters. Scrublands dominated by this plant are called jarales.
