A tree-like plant that can reach over 15 meters in height, with diverse branching that always occurs after flowering. It is a herbaceous plant, therefore its stem is not woody. The evergreen leaves at the branch tips are leathery, sword-shaped, light green with reddish bases and margins. The fragrant, greenish-white flowers are arranged in terminal inflorescences and produce an orange berry-like fruit that is a favorite food of birds. It is endemic to Macaronesia.
